In September 2015 we joined the Great Bear Rainforest Photography Trip with Maple Leaf Adventures. The Great Bear Rainforest is in the central coast of British Columbia, inland from Haida Gwaii, north of Vancouver Island. The Great Bear Rainforest is most famous for the Kermodi or Spirit Bears. These are Black Bears with a double recessive gene that makes some of them almost white in colour. These animals are not albinos--they are simply very light in colour. Other than their unusual colour, they are perfectly normal bears.
We traveled abord the SV Maple Leaf, a sail boat originally constructed in 1904 to compete in a race from San Francisco to Hawaii in 1906. The earthquake in San Francisco caused the race to be cancelled. The Mapleleaf has had a varried history, but was restored in the mid 1980's and since then has been used take tourist to destinations on the BC coast.
We traveled with 6 other guests, 3 crew, a photography guide and a chef. The staff provided very good service and kept us well fed. The accomdations are not luxury but cozy. The wildlife and scenery are very good.

Here are some killer whales communicating with each other, recorded by our crew in Campania Sound as we photographed the whales.
