In late April I went up the West Glacier Trail. You can see part of the trail on the lower parts of McGinnis Mountain.

The terminal lake is still mostly ice covered.

You get pretty close to the glacier on the West Glacier Trail.

The visitor center is just visible over the glacier.

The Mendenhall valley, where most of the people in the Juneau area live.

There are great views of the glacier and the mountains beyond.

I found this guy as the trail went through the trees.

The high ridge in the far distance is about 10,000 feet high.

This is as high as I got as the snow was too deep to continue. The red object is my shirt hanging in a tree to dry as I walk around taking pictures.

The vertical clearing on McGinnis Mountain is full of trees knocked down by an avalanche. It looks like a fast route to the top. It is not. It is a big jumble of fallen trees that must be climbed over.

Great view of the glacier on a clear day.

McGinnis Mountain seen from the valley.

The glacier from the East Glacier Trail.

In the middle of summer the lake is full of little bergs.

I believe this is a mature skunk cabbage on the East Glacier Trail. The leaves are huge.

This is a cool and shady area on the East Glacier Trail. It is obviously cool and wet here. The plant in the left foreground is "Devils Club".

This is a close up of Devils Club. The plant is completely covered (even the bottoms of the leaves) with barbed thorns. Do you touch!

The East Glacier Trail goes around a small mountain that has a significant history in the generation of electricity to run the mine. This is some equipment left on the top many years ago.
